How to add music to a reel on desktop

There are two completely different things people mean by this, and mixing them up is why so much advice on the subject is useless. Here's the difference, and how to do each one from a computer.

Attached audio vs. an audio overlay

Attached Instagram audio is the real thing. The track comes from Instagram's own licensed catalogue, your reel shows the track name at the bottom, and it is credited to that track's audio page — so anyone who taps it finds your reel alongside everyone else using that sound. That discoverability is the feature. It's why sounds matter on Instagram at all.

An audio overlay is you mixing a music file into your video before uploading. The sound plays, but Instagram doesn't know what it is. No track name, no audio page, no discovery — and if it's commercial music, you're the one carrying the copyright risk.

Most desktop tools only do the second one and describe it as "music". If you want the first, you need a tool that talks to Instagram's real audio system.

Attaching real Instagram audio from your PC

  1. Install InstaDesk and open instagram.com.
  2. Open the InstaDesk launcher and choose Post, reel or story, then the Reel tab.
  3. Drag your video in and pick a cover frame.
  4. Click the Music tab, then Instagram audio.
  5. Search for a track, or pick one from your saved library. Press play to preview before committing.
  6. Attach it and hit Share. The reel publishes with the track credited, exactly as if you'd posted from the phone.
This is free in InstaDesk, permanently. Attaching real Instagram audio is the headline paid feature in most competing extensions. It's in the free tier here on purpose — it's the reason people go looking for a desktop tool in the first place.

The faster route: grab a sound you just heard

If you're scrolling Reels and hear something you want, you don't need to search for it later. Open the InstaDesk panel on that reel and use the Use in a reel button — the track is attached to your next reel directly. No writing the name down, no hunting for the right version among six remixes.

Finding sounds that are actually working

Picking audio from a generic "trending" list is mostly guesswork, because trending is regional, niche-specific and usually already saturated by the time it's on a list.

InstaDesk takes a different angle. As you browse, it quietly notes every track Instagram serves you and counts how often each one comes back. Instagram's algorithm is already showing you what's working in your niche — the Sounds panel just makes that visible instead of leaving it as a vague feeling. Sort by Momentum to see what's climbing rather than what's already peaked.

Nothing about that leaves your computer. The library is stored locally, like everything else the extension keeps.

Laying your own audio over a video

If you genuinely want an overlay — your own voiceover, a track you have the rights to — the built-in Music Studio does it in the browser, using ffmpeg compiled to WebAssembly. Your video never gets uploaded anywhere to be processed; the work happens on your machine. Set the volume and start position, export, then upload the result as a normal reel.

Common questions

Will my reel show the track name?

Yes, if you used Instagram audio. That's the whole difference between attaching audio and overlaying it.

Why can't I find a specific song?

Availability depends on your account type and region. Business and creator accounts have a more restricted catalogue than personal accounts for licensing reasons — that's an Instagram rule, not a tool limitation, and no extension can work around it.

Does this host or copy the music?

No. InstaDesk resolves Instagram's own licensed track at the moment you attach it. It never mirrors or redistributes audio files, which is both the legally correct approach and the reason the catalogue is always current.
